What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Visit
Your child's first dental visit is a big milestone. It is normal to feel nervous, both for you and your child. At ToothMatters Jr., we have designed the entire experience to be positive, gentle, and even fun. Here is what to expect so you can walk in feeling confident.
When to schedule the first visit
Book your child's first dental appointment by their first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. This early visit is less about treatment and more about building a foundation -- checking that teeth and gums are developing normally, and getting your child comfortable in a dental setting.
What happens during the visit
The appointment is short and low-pressure. Dr. Sravanthi will gently examine your child's teeth, gums, and bite. For very young children, this might happen with your child sitting on your lap. We check for early signs of cavities, assess oral development, and answer any questions you have about brushing, teething, or thumb sucking.
How to prepare your child
Keep it simple and positive. Tell your child they are going to meet a friendly doctor who counts their teeth. Avoid using words like 'pain,' 'needle,' or 'drill' -- even to say they will not happen. Read a fun book about visiting the dentist. And most importantly, stay calm yourself. Children pick up on parental anxiety.
